For the first time in months, Canadian detectives have made significant headway in investigating a mysterious and shocking case that has received international attention. Police were able to identify one of five severed human feet in a sneaker found off the coastal strip of British Columbia
The first major success of the investigation was reported by the authorities on Monday. Now the police know the name of at least one person who owned the found feet. True, the identity of the deceased is kept secret, writes The Star Phoenix.
It is only known that the owner of the foot was a resident of the Lover Mainland area in British Columbia.
The reasons for the death of the person who disappeared a year ago are not known, but the police do not yet have any data on its possible violent nature. According to some reports, the deceased suffered from depression in the last months of his life.
The identified foot was found in a size 46 blue and white Adidas sneaker.
Recall that the beginning of the investigation of this mysterious case was laid almost a year ago, when in August 2007 the first two human feet in sneakers were found on the coast. Over the next 10 months, three more similar fragments of human bodies were collected in the same area.
The police continue to reassure the public that there is no basis for rumors of a maniac cutting off people's legs. At least the forensic experts did not find any traces of the use of tools with which the found feet could have been cut off.
Meanwhile, until recently, the most exotic versions circulated in society, starting with the assumption that a gang of bikers was operating in the district, and ending with the statement that the found pieces of flesh belonged to the victims of the tsunami and were brought by the current from Southeast Asia. Some, however, believed the assumptions that a fetish maniac had turned up in the district, cutting off the legs of the victims.
For their part, the police assumed that the feet belonged to passengers and a seaplane pilot who crashed in the Vancouver area in February 2005. The remains of the four men flying on it have never been found. Now this version has been rejected by investigators.
A powerful public outcry forced the Canadian authorities to hold a special press conference in early July in order to calm down at least the most fantastic rumors and speculations. At the same time, it was announced that DNA tests had established that two feet belonged to the same person. Another foot was determined to belong to a woman. This body fragment was found in May in the coastal strip of Kirkland Island.
Experts say that during their stay in the ocean water, the bodies of the dead quickly decompose, turning into the so-called cadaveric fat wax. Ultimately, they split into about 10 pieces, so finds of human heads and limbs on the ocean shore are not so rare.
However, Seattle-based oceanographer Curtis Ebbesmeier admits that finding only feet in one place looks very strange. According to him, in half of the cases, the bodies surface without special equipment. Even severed human heads are able to stay afloat. Therefore, finding only feet in sneakers seems supernatural and puzzling.

The Bacterium Found In Lake Vostok Has Not Yet Been Identified
Research by Russian microbiologists in Antarctica may end with the discovery of completely new life forms. Even a superficial analysis of the "dirty" samples taken made it possible to isolate a bacterium with a very special DNA. Scientists do not yet claim that the found "alien" form of life is of extraterrestrial origin, but compare their success with the discovery of life on Mars. However, they try not to make hasty conclusions. Western media, meanwhile, are surprised that "unknown life has been found
