How far has artificial intelligence (AI) technology gone? Having asked this question, specialists from the University of Illinois at Chicago (USA) tested one of the most advanced electronic intelligence systems - the ConceptNet 4 complex, developed at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology

To test the "intelligence" of ConceptNet 4, the system was subjected to the Wechsler Test of Intelligence in children between four and six and a half years old. True, only the verbal part of the program was used, which included tasks for the study of general awareness, comprehensibility, concentration of attention, ease of handling numerical material, the ability to form concepts, classification, ordering, abstraction, comparison. In addition, comprehension and ability to identify the content of words were assessed.

As it turned out, the intelligence quotient (IQ) of a machine is comparable to the developmental level of a four-year-old child. The computer copes well with vocabulary tests and tasks for determining similarities. But there are problems with more complex checks, requiring meaningful understanding and answering the “why” questions.

Robert Sloan, a professor at the University of Illinois and author of the study, points out that ConceptNet 4 results are highly uneven across different task groups. If we were talking about a child, it would be a signal of developmental delay and health problems.

The main challenge AI systems face is their lack of common sense, explains Sloan. For a person who is constantly in contact with the world around him, many things are so obvious that one does not even have to think about them. Yes, a computer can know about the freezing point of water, but, unlike us, it does not understand what ice feels like.

In other words, AI development is still very far from humans, since they simply cannot plunge into a real life environment, which, in fact, is a multifaceted learning environment. Therefore, the electronic mind cannot compete even with children of 6-8 years old, not to mention adults.

The research results will be presented on July 17 at the Conference on Artificial Intelligence in Bellevue (Washington, USA).
