The Pentagon has begun to develop technology that will allow a soldier to use implantable neurointerface connect to an external computer. The project was named NESD (Neural Engineering System Design). About creation military cyborgs of the future reports the ScienceAlert website.

The new program is aimed at developing a connection that allows the human brain and an external computer to exchange information. The military project is carried out under the BRAIN Initiative (Brain Research through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies), supported by Barack Obama.
The neurointerface is being developed by DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency). It will be a biosensor with a volume of no more than one cubic centimeter. The interface will provide the conversion of electrochemical signals of neurons into binary computer signals and vice versa.
NESD will increase the capabilities of existing neurointerfaces that can be used to connect the computer and the brain. DARPA plans to create a system that can interact simultaneously with a million neurons in the brain.
In addition to military applications, the American development can also find peaceful applications. Engineers and scientists hope to use NESD for the rehabilitation and treatment of neurological patients and for the benefit of synthetic biology, as well as for the development of low-power electronics.
