The unusual phenomenon was captured on video at a time when scientists were filming an unlit part of the moon to record flares caused by meteorite falls from the Geminid stream.

"We saw in the gray foggy video stream a certain ray, somewhat scattered, but distinguishable. Spatially it cut the surface of the Moon at an angle of 45 degrees to the terminator - this is the dividing line between the illuminated and unlit parts of the Moon. After the observations, we will try to see the files in more detail," said Alfiya Nesterenko, representing Novosibirsk State University.

She admitted that what she saw could be some kind of optical effect: "Although in the event of malfunctions of the optics or the matrix in the camera, this effect would be present constantly. And we observed this ray from time to time." An NSU employee said that the famous Russian astronomer and astrophotographer Alexander Yuferev will take part in the research, which will continue on the night of December 15 and 16.

The Geminids winter meteor shower, which peaks between 13-14 December, is the most intense of the year. It lasts for several days, hundreds of "shooting stars" can be seen from almost anywhere in the world. Astronomers call the stream of meteors that showered the Earth these days as the most mysterious, since Geminids differ in origin from most other accumulations of cosmic debris.

The fact is that most of the streams are associated with comets, while the Geminids originate from the asteroid 3200 Phaethon. This is a rather large rocky object, which was previously considered a minor planet, but now most experts are inclined to believe that Phaeton is an extinct comet. This version also explains well the origin of the Geminids - a stream of particles that are ejected from the surface of Phaeton.

This meteor shower is considered one of the brightest. The average frequency of visible meteors is 100 per hour, while there are many fireballs in the stream - especially bright objects that are visible in the night sky better than the planet Venus. Astronomers promise us a spectacular sight this year. For several days, it will be possible to observe an intense starfall in the region of the constellation Gemini.
