The collective farm chairman, wrapped in the hassle and hassle of haymaking, ordered three or four guys to take the coffin to the cemetery and bury it as quickly as possible. And that was a big mistake. The summer of 1948 was already hot. And after this incident, the heat has dragged on for something completely. Moreover, they began to notice that the rain was beginning to gather, somewhere in the distance behind Shishimora thunder rumbled, but the clouds bypassed the Anthrak fields. The crops were withered without rain. Dogs, sticking out their tongues, hid in burdocks, chickens walked, spreading their wings. And then one evening, when Uncle Koma was filing newspapers in the hut-reading room, a deputation of local old men came to him. The grandfathers came to ask permission to conduct an important prayer ritual in order to neutralize the great sin of burying a man who committed suicide in a rural churchyard. Uncle was young, hot, communist, and therefore atheist. He tried to convince the old people that everything they planned was darkness and superstition. So the old people left with nothing. But they didn’t go home at all.

Two of them harnessed an old gelding in a kolkhoz yard to a cart with a barrel and brought water from the smallest lake to the cemetery. (This lake was notorious. There was no fish in it, no livestock went here to drink. The water had a dark brown tint. There was a floating island on the lake with a birch growing on it. Depending on the direction of the wind, the island was nailed down. to one bank, then to the other.)

Other grandfathers cut out a thick aspen stake with an old ax, which they held for a week specially for the ritual under the shelf of a black bath. With this stake, the grave of the unfortunate shooter was pierced to the very coffin. After that, having made a prayer, they pulled out the plug from the barrel and aimed a stream of water at the hole on the grave. And what is interesting, while the water was flowing from the barrel, clouds began to gather. When the barrel was empty, rain poured and began to gain strength, the long-awaited rain. And when the conspirators dispersed to their homes, an avalanche rain fell on the village. Thunder and lightning flashed incessantly.

The next day, the village was a picture of devastation. The street was covered with gullies. In the vegetable gardens - onions, garlic, dill, tomatoes - everything was driven into the ground. Someone's roof was blown off, someone's roof was washed and a pile of firewood collapsed. Closer to dinner, gloomy old men with knapsacks on their backs came to my uncle. They have come to obey that we have done so many misfortunes. After all, the forty-eighth year separated the thirty-seventh from the bad memory by only a decade … My uncle was touched by the willingness of the old people to go to the district bullpen and let them go home.

The power of medieval witches can, if questioned, be explained by coincidence. This can also explain the saving rain in the post-war Anthrak. But there are more examples.

In the Bryansk region in the twenties there was a village Atrakin. And across the river was the village of Zaulye. It grew, widened and overtook Atrakin in size, and then completely swallowed this village. Now it cannot be found on maps. And at the end of the twenties of the last century, the extreme hut in Atrakini suddenly caught fire. Fire could be dealt with. But suddenly such a wind blew that the flame rose in a roaring whirlwind and sparks carried directly to the houses standing in the wind.

People rushed to take out clothes, tubs, drive out cattle. Shouts, lamentations, panic. And then an old man with an ancient wooden stupa came out of the hut closest behind the burning house. Why, it would seem, to save such good? But people knew that the old man would not be in vain to tinker with a piece of wood worn out by a shashel. And so it happened. The grandfather read the prayer and then directed the mouth of the stupa towards the wind. And in full view of the whole village, the wind reversed its direction. And all the houses, the roofs of which had already begun to smoke, were saved. Only the last house burned down. The cause of the fire seems to have been a samovar left unattended.

I know about the case in Antrak from eyewitnesses, relatives. And the third case with a turn in the movement of air masses during a fire was told to me by an extraordinary woman born in this village, Ksenia Evmenovna. The Mishakovs' family lived there - Evmen Logvinovich and Stepanida Emelyanovna. They had eight children. In the summer they worked on a collective farm. And in winter, the head of the family went to the mines in Donbass. Everyone was well fed, dressed, shod, healthy and well-groomed.

During the war with Germany, on the denunciation of the traitor partisan Mishakov, Evmen was shot. Later, the Magyar punishers drove everyone who was associated with the partisans into a vegetable storehouse, threw a barrel of burning tar there and brought down the entrance. This is how the gas chamber turned out. Stepanida Yemelyanovna also died in this cell. Ksenia Evmenovna went through a Nazi concentration camp, after the war she left for Sakhalin.

She raised pigs and gobies there in her backyard: just in those years, the Brezhnev food program was promoted. Now she lives in Moscow and fully justifies the title of “stodnitsa”, which her acquaintances have awarded her: she sews, knits, grows fruits and vegetables, can remove spoilage, the evil eye and even such a cruel slander, which is popularly called a “stake in the chest”.
