On October 17, 2014, a Dutch-Swedish naval exercise ended off the coast of Sweden. The next day, world agencies detonated an information bomb - in the nearby fjords … an emergency Russian submarine was found!
In the only photo presented, there really was some kind of muddy object on the surface of the water, which Swedish warships rushed to catch.
Unidentified underwater something
The Russian Ministry of Defense reacted ironically, advising them to ask the Dutch whose submarine, which was practicing an emergency surfacing during the exercises, could be near the Stockholm archipelago. The Dutch, whose underwater vehicle Brainvis was preparing to leave Tallinn at that moment, denied any involvement in the incident.
In turn, the Russian military, whose rescue forces of the Baltic Fleet were on the ground in accordance with the staffing table (which means that they were clearly not going to save the "damaged Russian submarine"), offered assistance in neutralizing the stranger. The Swedes refused help and warned that they were ready to force him to surface.
On October 24, after the Russian military department compared the Swedes' chances of catching the "submarine" with the likelihood of catching up with Carlson, the Royal Navy stopped searching for the mysterious floating craft. The question, what it was, remained unanswered. However, the Swedish sailors had to chase the elusive underwater objects more than once!
Since then, unidentified underwater objects, which in the Western press have invariably been called "Russian submarines" off the coast of Europe, have been recorded at least four times. Recently, a Scottish fisherman claimed that he had caught something large in his nets, which could be a submarine, and most likely a Russian one.
1950-1960s
For the first time, the Swedish Navy was forced to start a large-scale search for underwater ghosts in 1958, when several eyewitnesses observed a "silent plane without identification marks" that fell into the waters of the Alta Fjord. Believing that the plane had really crashed, the frigate Arendal and the submarine Sharpen with divers went to the scene.
Despite the fact that the depth was relatively shallow - 70 meters - neither the aircraft nor its wreckage could be found at the bottom. But the frigate's sonars sometimes recorded the movement of some unidentified floating object under water …
In 1962, ships of the Swedish Navy discovered an unidentified underwater object near the island of Gotland. After he did not react to the order to surface, the military went on to the power phase - two depth charges were detonated and anti-submarine torpedoes were fired. However, the discovered object, having developed an unusually high speed, broke away from its pursuers and left the territorial waters of Sweden.
In 1969, an unidentified floating object was discovered in a no-swim zone near Bjer-kyo Arholm, north of Stockholm. Several anti-submarine helicopters of the Navy and a coast guard cruiser were immediately sent to intercept the intruder. Despite the army, navy and air force units that joined the search, the mysterious object was never found.
1970-1980s
Reports of unidentified underwater objects appearing in the territorial waters of Sweden and neighboring Norway forced the commanders of these countries to take retaliatory measures - minefields were set up at the key points of the appearance of strangers. Some of the mines after that soon … disappeared.
Only in 1981, the "unidentified underwater object" was caught by the Swedes, so to speak, red-handed. Object numbered C-363 with a red star on board broke the direction finder antenna on the trawl of a fishing vessel, lost its course and, having surfaced, managed to blindly (it was late in the evening) to enter the secret fairway near the naval base in Karlskrona, where it sat down stranded.
The Swedes completely missed such an impudent invasion of the "red bear", and the Soviet giant was discovered by an accidental fisherman only in the morning. This was followed by a grandiose diplomatic scandal, but in the end the Swedes removed our submarine from the shallows, and she returned to her homeland.
In 1982, the Swedish fleet was, more than ever, close to capturing real, not Soviet, "elusive avengers" - one of these was locked in skerries using anti-submarine nets. In order to force him to rise to the surface, depth bombing was used, but the object then broke the steel net, capable of catching and holding the submarine, and went towards the Atlantic Ocean.
The following year, the picture repeated itself: a Swedish naval connection was pursuing an unidentified underwater object (NGO) in its territorial waters. Anti-submarine torpedoes and depth charges were launched, but the NGO went straight through the minefield (and all the mines that were nearby exploded without causing any harm to the stranger) and went into the Atlantic.
In 1984, not only unidentified underwater objects, but also unknown biological objects, mistaken for scuba divers, were again discovered near the already familiar naval base in the Karlskrona Bay! The entrance to the fairway was blocked, from torpedo boats and anti-submarine helicopters they bombed with depth charges, and the coast guard dropped 50 "anti-aqua-diving" grenades into the Baltic. Despite this, it was not possible to apprehend the strangers.
In 1989, the Swedish media got a reason to once again talk about the "Soviet threat" - the appearance of unidentified floating objects was repeatedly observed in the skerries locked by anti-submarine nets near Stockholm. The ultramodern at that time anti-submarine complex "Elma", sensitive to heat, sound and vibration, worked absolutely without failures during testing, but regularly refused when the NPO appeared.
At the same time, it was possible to detect one of the objects using a hydrophone lowered into the water from an anti-submarine helicopter. In the end, the Swedish press came to the conclusion that even the Soviets did not have such advanced submarines, so the suspicions of the communists on the pages of newspapers were removed.
1990s
The invasion of mysterious underwater strangers to the Swedes did not stop after the collapse of the Soviet Union. So, in 1992, near Oskelesund, coast guard ships spotted an unidentified underwater object in the territorial waters. The ships of the Swedish Navy were called in to help, conducting maneuvers nearby, which took part in the large-scale capture of the stranger with depth-bombing and launching anti-submarine torpedoes.
The Prime Minister of Sweden, Carl Bildt, even arrived at the scene, but the military could not please him with anything - the object, as before, eventually left at high speed in the direction of the Atlantic Ocean.
Wishing to summarize the numerous reports on the discovery of unidentified floating objects from the crews of aircraft, helicopters, patrol and anti-submarine ships, at the end of 1995, the Riksdag (Swedish parliament) created a commission of prominent scientists. They were tasked with providing an explanation for the underwater phantoms in Swedish territorial waters.
The commission studied more than 2,000 reports, but was careful in its conclusions - according to them, some of the objects observed by the Swedish military could not be underwater vehicles of any country in the world. When asked who they belonged to and where they came from, scientists could not give an answer …

Unidentified Diving Objects
Military doctor Rubens J. Villela stood on the deck of an icebreaker taking part in naval maneuvers in the North Atlantic. It was bitterly cold, so on deck, besides Villela, only the helmsman and the officer of the watch were shifting from foot to foot. Suddenly ice rose up not far from the icebreaker and something, breaking through its three-meter thickness, with a huge silvery bullet soared into the sky! A mass of ice blocks, flying into the air, crashed into a hole with a crash, over which thick steam swirled … In the photo: UFO departure from Kronotsky
