What started out as a small bump on his arm quickly morphed into a massive lesion that engulfed half of the man's body. For 65 days, he fought for his life and miraculously survived, despite a large loss of skin.

In March 2015, a 44-year-old resident of New Ulm, Minnesota, Chris Gordon woke up with a small bump in the area of his right elbow. Chris was worried and went to the hospital, but there he was told that it was a slight inflammation, like bursitis, due to the elbow being pressed down by the body during sleep.

But just a few hours after his visit to the hospital, Chris began to feel much worse, he became lethargic, sleepy and felt as if he had a bad cold. That same evening, he arrived at the ambulance department, where the doctors at first glance realized that something serious was wrong with him.

By that time, the bump on the elbow had turned into an ulcer, which expanded almost every hour. When Chris was brought to the Mayo Clinic, he was diagnosed necrotizing fasciitis, which in everyday life is called carnivorous bacteria.

This most dangerous bacterial infection very quickly destroys the skin, fat and connective tissue.

“Imagine a fire engulfing a dry section of the forest and the only way to stop it is to walk in front of it and conduct controlled burning of trees so that the fire cannot use them as fuel. Now imagine that the forest is skin, and the fire is necrotizing fasciitis and you will it's clear what happened to me, says Chris.

Chris spent two weeks in the intensive care unit, during which the skin of his right arm, back and chest was completely destroyed. The man looked like a horror movie character who was skinned alive.

When the spread of the infection was finally stopped, Chris was transferred to a regular ward for six weeks. All this time he was given strong pain relievers and pills that reduce blood clotting.

More than a dozen doctors, led by a plastic surgeon, worked on the restoration of the skin surface of Chris's body. When Chris finally got out of the hospital 65 days after being admitted to the hospital, he was undergoing outpatient treatment for another 8 months.

Skin grafts from Chris's legs and the intact side of his back were used to graft skin on the affected body parts.

The man quickly recovered and after a while could already return to his teaching profession and regular sports. The transplanted skin has taken root perfectly.

Necrotizing fasciitis is a very rare but deadly bacterial infection. The bacterium enters the body through a tiny cut or scratch and begins to spread at a tremendous speed, "eating" the skin, subcutaneous fat, connective tissue, and in particularly difficult cases, even muscle tissue. Blood flow to the affected area stops and this part of the body begins to die off. If you do not take any action, the patient can die in just a few days.

The first symptoms of necrotizing fasciitis are small reddish bumps on the skin, bruising quickly, increased sweating, chills, fever and nausea. In severe injuries, shock may occur.

Every year around the world, from 500 to 1500 cases of infection with necrotizing fasciitis are recorded, of which 20-25% are fatal.
