Scientists are already tired of explaining that the Maya did not predict the end of the world in 2012. They say that the coming apocalypse is only one (not too correct) of the interpretations of the only stone tablet from Tortuguero, in the Mexican state of Tabasco.

And suddenly the National Institute of Anthropology and History of Mexico issued a statement that there is another mentionconcerning our 2012th. It is located in the ruins of Comalcalco near Tortuguero. We are talking about an inscription carved or imprinted on a brick (yes, Comalcalco differs from other Mayan temples in that it is made of bricks).

The institute spokesman Arturo Mendes said that a fragment of the inscription was discovered and studied several years ago. It is kept in the storerooms of the institute. Experts are aware of its existence, but many doubt that it refers to the end of the world.

The inscription is a "calendar circle" - a combination of days and months, which repeats every 52 years. The date marked on the calendar is the end of the thirteenth baktun. Baktun is a period spanning approximately 394 years, and 13 is a sacred Mayan number. One of the variants of the Mayan calendar called "Long Count" begins in 3114 BC. BC, and the thirteenth baktun ends around December 21, 2012.

Mayan epigraphy specialist David Stewart of the University of Texas at Austin (USA) explains that there is no indication of the future. In the accompanying hieroglyphs, the present tense is used: "he (she, it) comes." From this, Mr. Stewart concludes that the inscription is dedicated to some historical event and does not contain a prophecy. And the 2012 reference is simply the result of a misinterpretation.

The Tortuguero tablet is also about 1300 years old; it is no less mysterious, but it is obvious that it is about the future. Some events are described in which Bolon Yokte takes part - a mysterious deity that the Maya associated with war and creation. Alas, erosion and cracks prevent the entire inscription from being read. Some suggest that it sounds like this: "He will come down from the sky."

One way or another, but it is incorrect to attribute to the Maya the near-Christian ideas about the coming of the Messiah and the end of the world. In the Maya view, time cycles began and ended without any apocalypse.

Nevertheless, rumors have reached such proportions (especially on the Internet) that the aforementioned Mexican Institute decided to hold a roundtable next week with the participation of sixty experts in order to finally clarify the question of Mayan beliefs and the meaning of the Long Count.
