In Pender County, North Carolina, in the early 19th century, there was a rich plantation on which slaves worked, and one day the owner of the plantation decided that one of the black female slave maids who worked in the house was too old to work.

This woman's name was Old Joe and she was very kind and caring to her master's family. She sincerely helped raise his children, caring for them as if they were her own, whom she never had. So the owner of the house, who was not a stereotypically evil planter, decided it was time for the old lady to rest.

He ordered to build for her a special small house in the courtyard, where the huts of slaves stood, to put Old Joe there, and ordered to take her from work in the fields, a young slave named Sissy. She had to help Old Joe and look after her.

Old Joe appreciated the care of her master, but very quickly she realized that young Sissy did not want to take care of her at all. Moreover, the girl turned out to be angry and insensitive. Instead of helping the old woman, she just looked after her a little and considered her a big burden.

She brought her water only when Old Joe repeatedly begged for water, and they fed the old woman only with those leftovers that remained after Sissy. But the worst part was that Old Joe could hardly walk and therefore mostly lay down all the time. And since Sissy did not look after her, the old woman developed bedsores.

The old woman tried to complain to the owner about Sissy, but by that time the owner's family had left the plantation for a while and only the slave warden remained there. She tried to convey a message to him, but it was all in vain, the overseer did not care.

Other slaves would occasionally visit Old Joe to try to help her, and each time they saw her suffer. They also heard the old woman cursing Sissy, and once Old Joe said bluntly that she would kill the bastard if she was younger and could walk.

Since then, she has regularly said this to those who came to visit her. But one night, Old Joe died and Sissy ran to the overseer to report it. The overseer told her to remain silent for a while, and then secretly buried Old Joe's body, since he did not want the other slaves to see how exhausted the old woman was.

Then he told Sissy to return to work in the fields in the morning, but she refused and said that she would wait for the owner to return. She didn’t want to go to work again, but wanted to live alone in a separate hut.

The next morning, the overseer saw that Sissy had not come to the field and was furious at her disobedience. He came to Old Joe's former house and saw that the door was closed. He started knocking and shouting for Sissy to go out into the field, otherwise he would punish her. But there was silence in response.

Then the warden kicked the door down, opened it and immediately stepped back in horror. Dead Sissy lay right at the door, and a grimace of horror was forever frozen on her face. Her fingers were bloody, she was scratching the door from the inside, trying to get out, and her face was bruised. From the bruises, Sissy's eyes were so swollen that they turned into narrow slits.

The overseer could not understand what had happened, there was nothing more suspicious in the hut, including signs of a break-in. And none of the other slaves had yet had time to know about Old Joe's death.

However, later, when the truth was revealed, the other slaves began to say that it was the spirit of Old Joe who had returned to fulfill his desire and kill the evil girl.
