Bolivian archaeologists said they found a 500-year-old mass grave with over a hundred skeletons and artifacts.

Some remains had artificially deformed elongated skulls, which most likely belonged to rich and noble people.

In South America, elongated skulls are mainly found in Peru, so the Bolivian find immediately interested many. However, archaeologists are deliberately hiding the place where they found the grave in order to save it from looting. It is only indicated that the burial is located about 30 kilometers from La Paz, the capital of Bolivia.

According to Reuters, the excavation was funded by the Bolivian Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the grave was found three months ago. Now the artifacts from the burial are being carefully studied.

According to archaeologists, the remains of the people belong to the local people of Pacajes, who were conquered by the Incas in the early 15th century. The heyday of the Pacajes culture came in the 1200s, and before that, in 700-900 AD, the Tiwanaku civilization flourished in these places. Therefore, it is possible that the Pacajes skull-drawing culture was adopted from the latter.

Of more than a hundred skeletons, only a few had elongated skulls, which were buried with special honors, probably indicating their high position in society. Together with the skeletons, they found many jugs and other ceramics similar to the Inca ceramics, as well as bronze jewelry and tools.

This is an unprecedented discovery, Bolivian officials said. Despite the fact that in the past centuries this burial was thoroughly plundered, there are still many things that are of great scientific value.

To get inside the burial, located in an abandoned quarry, archaeologists had to squeeze through a narrow hole only 70 cm wide and three meters long.

It is not yet known what killed all these people. Perhaps there was an epidemic, or maybe they were killed in battles with the Incas.
