American neurosurgeons during an operation to remove a brain tumor in a baby found a tiny foot in his head

As a result of examination with the help of tomography, a microscopic brain tumor was found in Sam Esquibel. Writes about this BBC.

However, during the operation to remove it, neurosurgeons, to their surprise, found in the child's head an almost completely formed foot, as well as rudiments of another foot, hand and thigh.

Such cases are known in science as "embryo in embryo", when one of the twins begins to form inside the second. However, as doctors from the children's hospital in Colorado Springs point out, such cases, when the formation of one of the twins begins in the brain of the other, are extremely rare.

According to pediatric neurosurgeon Paul Grabb, the boy is otherwise completely healthy. The boy's parents, Tiffany and Manuel Esquibel, say that they have already taken the baby home from the hospital. But now he will need to check his blood every month to see if there are signs of cancer or a new tumor. He also needs physical therapy to work out his neck. Nevertheless, according to the parents, the boy almost completely recovered from the operation.

Trevor Lawson, a spokesman for the British brain tumor charity, believes this unique case will enrich science. "More children die from brain tumors than from other types of cancer. That is why research to find out what causes them is so important," he said. "Rare cases, such as with this baby, with parental consent, can provide invaluable genetic material for research into the origin of such dangerous formations," added Trevor Lawson.
