The Russian-Ukrainian crew of the yacht "Scorpius", making a double round-the-world voyage, went in search of the legendary Sannikov Land, which researchers have not been able to find for decades, RIA Novosti reports the words of the press secretary of the expedition Anna Subbotina.

On Thursday, the head of the Russian-Ukrainian polar sailing expedition, Sergei Nizovtsev, got in touch and said that the ship's crew had decided to try to find Sannikov Land. The yacht is now located off the southern shores of Bennett Island in the Northeast Sea. “At night, we direct our feet to the northeast at a course of 30 degrees, in search of what no one has found before. Maybe we will be more fortunate,”says the diary entry of the ship's captain.

Brave seafarers are not afraid of a huge ice mass of 600 miles (1,111 kilometers), ice storms, impenetrable fogs, danger and uncertainty. The supplies of food and fuel on board will be enough for about a month of autonomous sailing. According to Nizovtsev, he is aware of the seriousness of the decision, but, like any navigator, he dreams of making a geographical discovery. The captain will be in touch every two days. Now the main difficulty, according to Nizovtsev, is the rapid change of time zones. Because of this, the crew will have to turn the hands by 1 hour every day.

There are 7 Russians and 3 Ukrainians on board the Scorpius. At the beginning of the year, the sailors circled Antarctica, while being able to enter the already freezing Ross Sea up to 74 degrees south latitude, and thereby set their first of 4 planned world records. And already in August, the sailors crossed the coordinates of 80.42 north latitude and 17.51 east longitude, bypassing the Spitsbergen archipelago from the north, which also no one had previously succeeded in. If the Scorpius succeeds in completing the Arctic circumnavigation, the sailors will become the first yachtsmen to carry out two polar expeditions around the world in one year. But the sudden decision to go in search of the mysterious island forced the expedition members to deviate from the planned route.

In 1811, the polar explorer Yakov Sannikov first suggested that there is an unknown archipelago to the north of Kotelny Island, which was later named after him. To date, scientists have come to the conclusion that Sannikov Land has disappeared "like some other melted Arctic islands, piled up, the so-called fossil ice," said Subbotina.

The 1902 expedition, led by the famous geologist and arctic explorer Eduard Toll, ended in the deaths of the participants. Only the documents of the expedition, collections, geodetic instruments and Toll's diary were found.

Vladimir Obruchev devoted his sci-fi novel "Sannikov's Land" to the search for the legendary land. Based on the book, a feature film was shot in 1972-1973 with the participation of Oleg Dahl, Yuri Nazarov, Georgy Vitsin and Vladislav Dvorzhetsky.
