The end of last week brought a sensation to the Volgograd region: dinosaur eggs were found in the village of Mokraya Olkhovka, Kotovsky district.

The find is truly amazing. In a small area, in shallow ravines, after the collapse of the ground during a flood, 15 ovoid fossils were revealed. Their diameter is 1–1, 2 meters. True, some of them do not at all look like "eggs" - one fossil looks like a dumbbell, in which two balls are connected by a bridge. Unfortunately, it is almost completely in the ground, so it is not possible to thoroughly examine it.

- A specialist from Moscow who arrived at the place of discovery of the find put forward the assumption that these are dinosaur eggs, - local boys told and boasted: - They cost 500 thousand rubles.

This conclusion has already caused skepticism among scientists. The fact is that the largest dinosaur egg found does not exceed 30 cm in length. The baby that hatched from him was also small - he had to grow very quickly in order to reach the size of an adult.

- It seems to me that these fossils do not at all look like the eggs of ancient reptiles - doubts Leonid Smelov … - On the territory of the Volgograd region, a warm prehistoric sea splashed, therefore, the remains of marine reptiles, such as ichthyosaurs, are often found here. Such remains, in particular, were found by Alexander Yarkov, a full member of the paleontological society at the Russian Academy of Sciences, a teacher at the Volga Humanitarian Institute. He put forward the theory that the fossils in Mokra Olkhovka are most likely a calcareous formation. Although here, rather, not limestone, but something like iron ore.

"It can be the fruits of ancient marine plants" - suggested by other members of the expedition … There are also other options: outcrops of iron rock, which for some reason formed round balls. Indeed, there is a lot of iron in the form of brightly colored taluses and "rusty" rock fragments. Apparently, this is why the alien version is popular - they say, this is the place of death of an alien ship, and the balls are something like shells. A kind of bomb bay!

In favor of the "iron ore" hypothesis is a fact told by the former director of the Mokroolkhov Museum, Vasily Pogrebny. He is sure that the mysterious balls half a human height are the consequences of geological excavations that took place here in the late 40s, when deposits of iron ore were discovered in this area.

Iron appears on the surface in a very strange way. So, in the slopes, you can see some roundness - this is yellow clay, which seems to be enclosed in a petrified iron "pipe". The clay itself is constantly wet, as if moisture is constantly flowing through an "iron pipe".

Today, the site of the discovery of prehistoric fossils is very popular, everyone is happy to capture themselves next to the relics. Several ravines with talus and fossils converge into one, forming a kind of galleries along which visitors stroll. If not for the mosquitoes, the inspection would have turned into one of the most pleasant pastimes in the Volgograd region. Either way, finding fossils is very important. Of course, these "eggs" are of scientific value, and in some countries - aesthetic. For example, in China they pay a lot of money for such things. It is a pity that some careless "tourists" are rather rude to the fossils, causing irreparable harm to them.

It is known that similar finds in the Kotovsky region have already taken place in the post-war years. But what is this ?! A question that only scientists can finally answer after conducting special research.
