Officers of the Western Military District showed reporters how the destruction of ammunition is going on at the Elizavetinka training ground closest to the city. In this way, hoping to prove his innocence to the earth vibrations recorded by the seismic station and which caused discontent among the inhabitants of the northern regions of St. Petersburg

Of course, they did not believe them. It's too convenient to blame the military in this situation. The latter have their own version: they believe that the hype can be beneficial to seismologists.

In order to understand that the military has nothing to do with tremors (Fontanka was the first to write about the situation) in the north of St. Petersburg, it is enough to measure the distance between the city and Agalatovo, the nearest place where ammunition is destroyed. About 27 km separate the metropolis and the 18th engineering test site. Plus, almost 6 km further down the forest road. The fact that shells with an expired shelf life are disposed of here is evidenced by the numerous pits and funnels around. The arriving journalists were shown the masonry of charges. The power of each is different - the total amount destroyed in one explosion, according to the instructions, cannot exceed 120 kg in TNT equivalent.

So that the TV crew could get a colorful picture, the video cameras were installed 300 meters from the prepared ammunition, turned on and left alone. Sappers took refuge in an underground bunker, and officers from the command staff, along with civilians, were loaded into vehicles and taken to a safe distance - 2 km away. A few minutes later, an explosion thundered. That is, most likely, it thundered - the media representatives heard only a faint echo. We returned for the cameras. The technique remained intact. Probably, the low power of the charge helped - about 40 kg of TNT. For comparison, the second time they blew up shells by 120 kg. The difference is subtle.

They called the seismic station of the Pulkovo Observatory - no earth vibrations were registered. We phoned the residents of the neighboring gardening - the houses were shaking. This is a sound wave, military engineers explain.

“It’s impossible,” Nikolai Mikhailov, professor at Voenmekh, categorically stated to the journalists' suggestion that the explosions in Elizavetinka could have caused concern for the residents of St. Petersburg. "We have nothing to do with this," - the head of the engineering service of the 1st command of the Air Force and Air Defense Stanislav Doroshenko supported the civilian, demonstrating formulas and calculations as evidence. For people far from the exact sciences, the example of Hiroshima and Nagasaki can be indicative. According to a report by the Manhattan Design Center of the US Army, the devastating consequences of the explosion of an atomic (!) Bomb, the power of which is equivalent to 20,000 tons of TNT (!), Has completely ceased to be felt within a radius of 12 km. Recall that in 27 km from St. Petersburg, conventional shells with a total capacity of 120 kg in TNT equivalent are undermined.

If you believe mathematics, physics, history, it turns out that the military is really not involved in the shaking houses in the north of St. Petersburg. But then the question remains open why the townspeople, if not the earth from under their feet, then the chandeliers shudder for sure. And this fact, by the way, was recorded by the seismic station of the Pulkovo Observatory. By the way, Bella Assinovskaya, the head of the seismology sector of the LRG GAO RAS, who was invited to the demonstration events in Elizavetinka, did not completely believe in the innocence of the servicemen. But, according to her, now it is hardly possible to prove anything. This is due to the lack of the necessary equipment, for many years the city administration has been asking whether it is expedient to surround St. Petersburg with a seismological observation network. If it existed today, the nature of the fluctuations would be explained within a few days, Assinovskaya is convinced.

Meanwhile, the military has its own version of what is happening. The created hype in the press can be equally beneficial for summer residents and those living in the neighborhood, and for the same seismologists. The first, perhaps, hope that the explosions will stop, the noise of which really interferes with them. The latter can count on the allocation of grants for research and the supply of equipment.

As the head of the engineering service of the 1st command of the Air Force and Air Defense Stanislav Doroshenko suggests, if we take the second version as the main one, then the fact of falsification cannot be ruled out: the registration of certain events by a seismic station may well be the work of specific specialists pursuing their own benefit. In favor of this assumption, according to the sapper, is the fact that the other two stations did not record fluctuations. The fact is that special equipment was installed in Vyborg and on the island of Valaam. Thus, the 18th polygon is located in a conditional triangle between seismic stations.

The military version, although doubtful, has a right to exist. In any case, it is more plausible than the invasion of extraterrestrial civilizations. Be that as it may, the military prosecutor's office of the Western Military District has now joined the investigation of the reasons. Although a prosecutor's check can only clarify if the military violates the instructions when destroying ammunition.

By the way, the flaws in the liquidation were revealed by Rospotrebnadzor during an inspection at the landfill near Kingisepp. Experts have determined that the noise level has been exceeded. On this occasion, the regional ombudsman Mikhail Kozminykh sent a letter to the commander of the Western Military District with a request to take action. However, it is unlikely that the military will be able to be quieter, since aerial bombs weighing 500 kg each with a TNT charge of 200 kg are destroyed at the distant range. Do not cut them, in fact.

Perhaps there were much fewer complaints about the sounds of explosions and shaking walls, if the leadership of the Ministry of Defense more often spoke to civilians with explanations why "expired" ammunition is being disposed of. Millions of tons of the legacy of the Soviet Union are now stored throughout the country and represent a giant time bomb. Moreover, no one can predict when and in what place it will explode. But Ulyanovsk alone is enough to understand why the military was tasked with completing the liquidation by the end of 2011. In the Western Military District, in the immediate vicinity of St. Petersburg, destruction takes place at three ranges. Over the past year, 12 thousand tons of bombs were detonated at Kingisepp. According to the sappers, at this rate and volume, it will take them 10 years to complete the task.

But in the army, as you know, orders are not discussed. The officers of the engineering troops say that once the supreme has set a task, it means that it will be completed. Even if you have to make changes to the calendar for this. But no one will violate safety precautions, they say. Explosions with installed power only, during daylight hours and on weekdays.
