Perhaps there is no more famous character from Irish lore than the fabulous creature known as the leprechaun. They are usually depicted as tiny men with magic, beards and green coats and hats

In most Irish tales and legends leprechauns are considered mischievous pranksters, although they are also very good at sewing shoes and doing various crafts. They also have a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. In general, they seem to be completely fabulous creatures.

In fact, there are a surprisingly many outlandish stories with claims to be plausible about encounters with leprechauns. More precisely, with little bearded men dressed in green clothes.

I have been fascinated by Irish folklore for a long time (and I believe in Little People) and could not resist asking questions when I met a man from Ireland. When I asked him if he believed in fairies and similar creatures, he said yes and that his the father once met a leprechaun.

According to him, his father was a kind, but stubborn person and therefore he practically did not tell anyone about this case, only his family. It happened in his native village, where only about 100 people lived when he was still a child.

Once he was walking home from a local school, and the path was not short, because the school was in a neighboring town. And when he began to approach the house, he suddenly saw a little man on the side of the road. He was no more than half a meter in length and was dressed in tweed pants, a vest, a shirt and all the rest, and on his head was a hat. His hair was red, like all leprechauns.

The boy could not believe his eyes and even blinked several times, but the leprechaun sat in the same place and slowly cleaned his little shoes. Then the boy decided to come closer, but when the leprechaun was about three meters away, the boy suddenly ran into an invisible obstacle.

It was as if the being were surrounded by a force field. At the same time, the leprechaun was still cleaning his shoes and never raised his head to look at the man. Then the boy got really scared, screamed loudly with fear and ran to his house. His older sister jumped out into the street, but by that moment the leprechaun had suddenly disappeared, as if he had never been there."

Another strange story took place in 1964 in the city of Liverpool, England, in the large Jubilee Park. This is a cluster of green fields and golf meadows, and it was here in the meadow called Bowling Greens that people began to regularly see little people looking like gnomes or leprechauns.

Their height varied from 10-15 cm to half a meter and they looked traditional for such creatures - with thick beards, eyebrows and dressed in green jackets. True, the hats on their heads were not green, but white, but their skin was often described by eyewitnesses as greenish.

Most often, eyewitnesses called these creatures leprechauns and journalists quickly picked up this name. One of the eyewitnesses tells the following about his case:

“I was one of those who saw these leprechauns, I was then a schoolboy and went to school on Bray Street. And at that moment our whole class saw them. These creatures, who were four, climbed out of the window of our school on the first floor and sat on the windowsill, swinging their legs, dressed like leprechauns.

I also saw some of them in the Kensington Fields, near the library, but my parents tried to convince me that it was just my imagination or my imagination.

It was early July 1964, around 4:30 pm, and I remember it all as if it were yesterday. I was 10 years old then and I was about to go play football with my friends when I saw these little men in the grass. They were about 15 cm tall and were dressed in red and black, one of them had a hat.

They stared at me and I panicked and then ran home. Then my mother told me that other people had seen leprechauns the day before on Jubilee Drive and Edge Lane. On the same evening, many people gathered at Jubilee Drav, and I remember there was one girl with a jam jar. She wanted to catch the leprechaun and put him in this jar."

The more such messages were, the more it created hype. People, especially children, began to come to Bowling Green to see leprechauns. The crowd became so large that the police had to intervene and disperse them, but then little people were seen in this place for a long time.

A woman living nearby claimed to have seen three green-robed leprechauns sitting on the garden wall and throwing stones at her dog, which was barking loudly at them. And then another woman said that she saw a little man climb up her tree.

Even stranger, UFOs were seen frequently in the same area during the same days, although it is not clear if they were involved. It is also unclear why all eyewitnesses called these little men leprechauns, because they did not have pots of gold with them, and they were not always in green clothes.

By the way, little people often throw stones. Apparently this is one of their ways to defend themselves or attack a potential enemy. Or they joke like that. One of these stories was described in the book "Mysterious Disappearances and Other Strange Tales" by Ron Quinn. There is a story about a couple named Rick and Joyce who owned a remote mountain lodge where they spent their weekends.

One day they were walking in the garden when a small pebble fell at their feet, which seemed to appear out of nowhere. Puzzled, people looked around and at first suspected that maybe the squirrel had dropped a stone from the tree, but there were no squirrels nearby.

As they watched, another stone flew out of the branches, flying at low speed and clearly not intended to harm. Another stone followed, hitting the porch and rolling down the steps.

The puzzled couple looked up at the trees again, and this time they saw a little man among the branches, peeking out from behind the leaves at them. They named him a leprechaun because he wore a pointed hat and green clothes and a beard.

The little man was only about 30 cm tall and seemed to smile at them before jumping from the tree onto the roof of the house and disappearing into the bushes.

In the same book, there is a story about a man named Pat O'Leary, dated 1884. Pat saw a little leprechaun, about 40 cm tall, standing on a rural road, and decided to chase him. The creature has been described as extremely fast and agile for its size, but somehow Pat managed to keep up with it.

Pat chased him to the clearing, and then the little man disappeared. When Pat looked around for this creature, he suddenly received a lump of dirt on his forehead, which later left behind an inexplicable mark like a mole, which remained forever on his skin. Whatever it was, it clearly didn't like being chased.
