In Irish folklore, along with tales of fairies, the so-called "Hungry Grass" (fear gortach). This herb is cursed by fairies and can grow in fields, mountains, forests or elsewhere. If a person or an animal gets into this place, then he begins to be tormented by severe hunger.

This hunger is so strong that in a short time it can drive you crazy and turn a healthy person into a barely alive and weak creature. The only way to protect yourself from the curse is to carry at least some food with you, even if it is just or a piece of bread.

In some Irish tales, hungry grass not only causes hunger, but behaves like a living creature, trying to twine around a person's body when he walks by. And if she does that, then how does a vampire start drinking juices from a human. And if such a grass grows on a field, then neither wheat nor any other crop will be able to grow on this field.

During the great Irish potato famine of the 1840s, it was rumored that the Hunger Grass was the cause of the famine. At the same time, the image of the Man of Hunger (Fear gorta) arose, a creature who looks like a severely emaciated man and whose nature comes from the same hungry grass.

Where the Man of Hunger appeared, he asked for alms from passers-by and those who refused him, then faced with a crop failure, which means hunger.

In the region of Kiltubbrid, the same term Fear gorta at about the same time began to call the sudden feeling of severe hunger that pounces on lonely travelers wandering in the mountains. This attack forces travelers to find a source of food as quickly as possible, and if he does not eat enough in the near future, he will die of hunger.

Also, in some places in Ireland, there were the so-called Hungry Hills - these are hills completely overgrown with hungry grass. Going there was tantamount to committing suicide.

It would seem, why should fairies impose such a terrible curse on the grass? However, one must understand that in Ireland, fairies were not just spirits of nature, but were also associated with death, and such a curse simply helped them collect even more terrible "tribute" from people.

There is a supposedly real story about how one day an Irishman was faced with hungry grass in our time. Together with his little son and dog, this man lived in a remote area of the country where tourists do not come.

They liked walks in the fields and once, while walking, a man wandered into an area with lush and thick grass and immediately felt a strong pain in his stomach. His son brought him out of the grass and took him home, deciding that his father had simply caught a cold, and the dog deliberately did not go on the grass, but stood nearby and barked anxiously at her.

In the following days, the man developed an unhealthy appetite, but no matter how much he ate, he began to lose weight a lot. He went to the doctor, but he did not find any signs of any illness in him. The hunger eventually became so strong that the man even began to eat dog food and took the food away from his son.

The authorities finally paid attention to this family and the child was taken away by the guardianship authorities. By that time, the boy's father had turned into a very emaciated person, similar to a concentration camp prisoner. He was admitted to the hospital, but again they could not find the cause of his condition.

In the hospital, he was abundantly fed under the supervision of nurses, and then they put on a nutritional drip, but every day he became more and more emaciated and then died. For his son, this was a heavy blow, because he still remembered how his mother had died a few years earlier.
