Throughout the history of mankind, there have been legends about people who could turn into animals. The most dangerous among them was the bloodthirsty werewolf. But in countries where tigers lived, legends about werewolf tigers were more common

By the middle of the 19th century, when rational thinking began to prevail in society more and more often, doctors came to the conclusion that the problem of werewolves is not in mysticism, but in the psyche, that is, werewolf is a form of mental illness.

Then the term arose "clinical lycanthropy", which originally referred to cases where people considered themselves werewolves, but then began to include other animals.

For example, such a diagnosis was made to people who were sure that they could turn into snakes, dogs, hyenas, and even bees. At the same time, this diagnosis was made very rarely. Psychiatrist Jan Dirk Blom from the Netherlands once estimated that only 13 people had confirmed clinical lycanthropy in the past 162 years.

How can a human brain become so damaged that its owner begins to consider himself an animal? Why does he begin to think that he has paws instead of arms and legs, that he can move on all fours and that sharp claws come out on his fingers?

This problem is so strong that even looking in the mirror and seeing there not a beast, but a person, the sick person still believes that he is seeing the beast.

In 2014, a journalist from the medium.com portal Helen Thomson wondered if there are people with such a diagnosis right now, in our days. She interviewed many psychiatrists and learned from them that none of them had encountered such patients. But then she was lucky, a doctor from the United Arab Emirates said that there is such a patient in his clinic.

This man was called Matar and he suffered from clinical lycanthropy for many years. During seizures, he "turned into a tiger" for several hours. Soon, the journalist was already flying to Abu Dhabi to talk to the "werewolf".

Mataru was already over forty years old, he wore a thick black beard and dressed in traditional Arab clothing - kandura (long white loose tunic up to the toes). There were dark circles under his eyes, which only betrayed a sick person in him.

Matar was 16 years old when he was diagnosed with schizophrenia and then admitted to the local psychiatric ward. This happened after he began to have visual and auditory hallucinations, he heard exploding bombs and called the police, claiming that enemies were attacking the country.

When he became an adult, a new attack came to him, now he believed that he knew how to turn into a tiger. At the same time, he had very vivid sensations of this, he literally felt how his arms and legs turn into paws, and sharp claws emerge from the paws.

When he had seizures, Matar locked himself in his room so as not to harm anyone. But one day an attack caught him right in the hairdresser and then he attacked the hairdresser and tried to bite him.

According to psychiatrists, clinical lycanthropy often occurs as one of the manifestations of schizophrenia, while schizophrenia itself is a very strange and still poorly understood mental disorder. It affects about 1 in 100 people and it is unclear why.

Schizophrenics can suffer from hallucinations, paranoia, and other mental disorders. These deviations can be passed from parent to child, but can also be due to drug use or severe psychological trauma.

Schizophrenia is so strange and incomprehensible that some researchers of anomalous phenomena have their own bizarre theory about it. They believe that schizophrenia is not a disease, but a kind of "sixth sense", possessing which a person begins to see and hear what others do not see and hear.

At the same time, what he sees and hears is not in his imagination, but exists in reality, just at a different level of space-time, so ordinary people do not see or hear this. It is for this reason that eyewitnesses of UFOs, yeti and other strange things are often afraid to talk about it, believing that they will be mistaken for mentally ill.

But back to our werewolf tiger. Matar told Helen that he has a wife and two children, one of whom is 14 years old. and the other 8. However, he has not seen them for a long time, because his wife does not want the children to meet with such a father. She is confident that he can be dangerous to them and that during his attacks Matar will harm the children.

"My schizophrenia started with hallucinations. I saw people who weren't really there. They were men, women and children, they grabbed my legs and I fell to the floor."

Then these hallucinations intensified.

"It seemed to me that strangers can control my speech, that they read my mind and do not allow me to talk."

When Matar transforms into a tiger, he feels a strong urge to growl and fears that he might attack people to eat them.

"When this happens, the hairs on my body stand on end. Then I feel a prick in my body, the pain starts in my left leg. I feel an electric shock. I want to bite someone. I just know that I am turning into a tiger."

The interview is soon disrupted because Matar states that he is feeling it in his body right now. He says that he senses the danger coming from Helen, that she wants to attack him, and then makes a very realistic growl. Two doctors in the room try to calm Matar down. According to them, this was because he did not take his pills today.

When Helen leaves the room with Matar, she asks one of the doctors if they have been able to find a reason why Matar considers himself a tiger. The doctor replies no: Matar's brain scan revealed no abnormalities.

After a short break, Matar calms down and assures that he would like to continue the interview. Helen agrees.

"I don't know why I become a tiger. I just know what I am. I hear different voices around me, they laugh at me and say that I am no good for anything, that I am trash and I am not good for to be human. Sometimes I feel like a lion is attacking me and biting my neck. It hurts a lot and I even see blood flowing out of my body in the place where he bit me. I cannot protect myself from this lion, so I think the main thing is to attack first."

Helen asks how long these attacks last and Matar replies that sometimes a few minutes, but sometimes several hours. And when he looks in the mirror, he sometimes sees himself in the form of a tiger.
