It is still unknown whether it was an ordinary pig that got lost in underground tunnels or another monster that only looked like a pig. And whether this creature existed at all
In the 18th and 19th centuries, the sewerage systems of the largest cities in Europe were a completely separate world of tangled tunnels and sewers stretching for thousands of miles.
The London sewer network was one of the most frightening and extensive, there was not even a complete map of all its tunnels, including abandoned and unfinished ones.
And amid these dark, damp and smelly dungeons, in which rats lived and sometimes the homeless wandered, something else existed. Something big, black, predatory and completely elusive.
Those homeless people who had the chance to see this creature and at the same time stay alive were told that this creature is huge in size and at the same time looks like a black pig.
But most often the terrible man-eating pig was met by the so-called "toshers" - garbage hunters. Their profession is often called the worst in the world, because they spend whole days digging in the sedimentary mud of sewer tunnels, looking for coins, jewelry, pieces of metal, ropes, rags, and so on that had at least some value among the sewage that accidentally fell into the sewers.
Toshers climbed into the sewers for garbage even when the authorities banned such activities in 1840. Then they just started doing it at night.
And then one day, in the area of tunnels near the urban area of Hampstead, the toshers began to notice at night how something large, black and very aggressive was walking next to them and the ubiquitous rats. When the tosher got too close to this creature, it could attack and injure it with its fangs.
Therefore, when this or that Tosher did not return from another night out in the tunnels and no one then found his remains anywhere, rumors began to circulate that the same pig-like creature attacked and ate them.
According to one version, once upon a time, an ordinary pig, which was pregnant, wandered into the tunnels. She could not get out and soon gave birth to numerous offspring. In the sewers, they had enough feed and the pigs grew and multiplied safely.
Due to constant interrelated sexual relations, these pigs began to be born with anomalies and soon a real mutant was born among them, which grew to enormous size and who no longer had enough food from the garbage. Therefore, he began to hunt for larger prey.
This huge black boar, one after another, devoured his fellows, and then began to attack people. Every bizarre disappearance of a person living near the Hampstead area has been attributed to this boar. Local residents were also afraid that a terrible pig or pigs at some point would find a way out of the sewer and start attacking people right on the streets of the city.
Even common pigs can get very large and look intimidating.
For almost 20 years in London there have been stories about this animal, one more bloodthirsty and frightening than the other. Many attributed them to folk inventions, but there were always eyewitnesses who saw large black pigs in the sewer tunnels. Or those who did not see, but heard in the same place an ominous grunt in the dark.
Only in 1858, when the sewers of London were completely rebuilt, the stories about the black terrible pig lost their relevance. By that time, the animal was no longer met by either vagrants or workers rebuilding the tunnels.
It is possible that the terrible black pig by that time simply died of old age, on average pigs live just about 15-20 years.
