Although modern scholars have managed to translate most of this cryptic writing, there are still parts that remain completely incomprehensible, and much of what has been decoded is still mostly incoherent and does not make much sense
In the 17th century in Italy, there was a girl named Isabella Tomasi, who once decided to become a nun and in 1645, when she was only 15 years old, went to the Benedictine monastery of Palma di Montechiaro on the Sicilian island of St. Paul.
In the monastery, she took a new name for herself and now her name was Maria Crochifissa della Concesione.
Little has survived about her life, but there are records that say that when the girl ended up in the monastery, she was very frightened and anxious that she had a "cursed unclean heart."
It is for this reason that Mary decided to go to a monastery, as she thought that here, in a calm and humble atmosphere, she would reconcile with her inner demons. But everything turned out quite differently, in the monastery Sister Mary became worse.
One day, right during Mass, Sister Mary began to shout out various obscenities, and then fainted at the altar for no apparent reason. In one of the following days, all this happened again and then began to happen regularly, very frightening the nuns.
Then she began to experience sudden seizures, during which she twitched violently and growled at others like a wild animal. At the same time, she began to fall into strong rage if she came across a religious sculpture or a crucifixion cross.
In those moments when Mary was not in a fit or a fit of rage, she behaved like a devoted Christian, but she remembered what happened to her in moments of clouding of her mind, and said that demons or the Devil himself were attacking her, and that they want to corrupt her, lead her into Darkness or use her as a guide between the worlds.
Sister Maria tried to seek help from other nuns, but they were too frightened by what was happening to her and gradually began to actually avoid her. Mary herself also suffered from this and soon almost stopped leaving her cell, as she believed that in this way she endangered other people less.
Year after year passed in this way. Sister Mary's condition did not improve, but did not worsen, so that gradually the nuns got used to her oddities. But then there was a sharp deterioration. On August 11, 1676, Sister Mary was spending the evening as usual in her cell, when the other nuns suddenly heard her loud scream.
It was not like everything. what they had seen or heard earlier, so they quickly ran and looked into Sister Mary's cell. A strange picture awaited them.
They saw Sister Maria lying on the floor and all soiled in ink, and in one hand she was holding a piece of paper, all covered with mysterious scribbles, incomprehensible symbols, signs and random letters, as if taken from an outdated language. It was completely impossible to read anything written on the sheet.
When the nuns lifted Mary from the floor and she came to, she told about that. that the Devil personally came to her room and wrote this message through her body. She could not remember how she herself wrote this letter and did not know what the message was about, but she passionately began to ask the nuns to destroy this sheet with scribbles.
The nuns believed that the mysterious letter was written by Satan himself and that Sister Mary was possessed, but did not dare to burn the letter, as she begged for it.
Shortly after this incident, Mother Superior Maria Serafica wrote a report on the plight of Sister Mary, believing her to be attacked by evil spirits and mentioned in the report and a letter "written in an inaccessible way for ordinary mortals to understand."
In subsequent centuries, many church leaders, scholars and experts in ancient languages tried to decipher this "Letter of the Devil", but to no avail.
A glimmer of hope flashed in 2017 when a group of Sicilian scientists took up the deciphering of the letter and later announced it. that they were able to decipher most of the message.
They found that writing was composed of bits and pieces of several ancient languages, including Greek, Latin, Runic, and Arabic, all mixed into a kind of unique code.
“We have heard about the software used by the secret services to crack the code. We downloaded similar software in the ancient Greek, Arabic, runic and Latin alphabets to decipher some letters and it turned out that it really looked like something devilish. The letter looked like as if it was written in shorthand characters.
We hypothesized that Sister Mary created a new dictionary using ancient alphabets that she may have known. We analyzed how syllables and graphisms are repeated in writing to locate vowels, and ended up with an improved decryption algorithm.
We thought we could just decipher a few words that made sense. But the nun was fluent in languages and the message was more complete than expected, - said the head of the group Daniel Abat.
You ask, what was said in the letter? Although scientists have managed to translate most of them, there are still parts that remain completely incomprehensible, and much of what has been decoded is still mostly incoherent and does not make much sense.
The letter mentions that The Holy Trinity (God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit) is a "dead (useless, unnecessary) load", and it also says: "God thinks he can free mortals" … There were also words "The system doesn't work for anyone …" and "Perhaps Styx is sure now"probably referring to the river Styx, which divided the land of the living and the dead in Greek and Roman mythology.
The letter also states that "God was created (invented) by man."
In the days of Sister Mary, all this sounded very blasphemous. So why did she even write this? The team of researchers believes that perhaps Maria was just a very worried woman, and maybe suffering from schizophrenia.
Knowing at least several ancient languages, Sister Mary, without a doubt, was a very educated person for her time, but what could make her, even if she was a schizophrenic patient, assure that through her the Devil left people a message? And what about those seizures that happened to her before writing this letter?
If she was able to compose this message using a very complex cipher from different languages, then we can even talk about genius. How many people are capable of this even today? Or did she not do any of it, and it was all really the work of the Devil?
Sister Maria died on October 16, 1699, having uttered the words "Santo, santo, santo" ("Holy, holy, holy") before her death. After her death, she was awarded the title of Venerable for her faith.
